MaymeNamed for Mayme Clayton (1923-2006) believe that “children should know that black people have done great things” and dedicated her life to doing just that. She was a passionate librarian and the founder of the largest privately held collection of African-American historical materials in the world.

MayaIn honour of Maya Angelou (1928-2014) who was an American poet and civil rights activist. My favourite quote of Maya’s is “You are only free when you realize you belong no place – you belong every place – no place at all. The price is high. The reward is great.”

C.J.Madame CJ Walker (1867-1919) built a hair care empire with her daughter, and is know as the first female self-made millionaire in America. In her time she was an entrepreneur, philanthropist, civil rights activist; and her contributions helped various orphanages, institutions and individuals long after her death.

JojoJosephine Baker (1906-1975) was a performance artist, civil rights activist and war hero. She created a family for herself by adopting 12 children, of all different backgrounds, to prove that people of all different ethnic and religious backgrounds can love each other; she called her family “The Rainbow Tribe”.
